DIY Star Mobile: Make a Twinkling Star Hoop Decoration
A wooden hoop, a handful of glitter stars, and a few ribbon tails can become a lovely hanging decoration. This DIY star mobile combines champagne gold and silver cardstock with warm white lights around an open hoop. The stars hang at different heights, while straight satin ribbons add a little movement without crowding the design.
Make it for a holiday corner, a star-themed party, or a cozy reading space. Older children can help trace and cut the stars, with an adult handling installation and checking the lights. The project uses five practical steps, and most of the assembly is done flat on a table before the mobile is lifted into place.
- Difficulty:
- Easy to medium
- Recommended age:
- 8+ with adult supervision
- Time needed:
- About 40–60 minutes, plus glue-setting time if glue is used
- Main materials:
- Wooden embroidery hoop, glitter cardstock, satin ribbon, clear thread, battery-operated LED fairy lights
- Finished craft:
- A hanging hoop mobile with six metallic stars, four ribbon tails, and warm lights

Materials You Will Need
- One 10-inch (25 cm) wooden inner embroidery hoop; set the adjustable outer ring aside.
- One letter-size or A4 sheet each of stiff champagne-gold and silver glitter cardstock, preferably with glitter on both sides.
- About 3 m of clear nylon craft thread.
- About 1.5 m of thin ivory cotton cord for the three suspension cords.
- About 80 cm each of ivory and champagne satin ribbon, approximately 1 cm wide.
- One lightweight battery-operated micro LED light strand with enough lit wire to go around the hoop and an unlit lead long enough to reach its separately supported battery pack.
- The batteries specified by the light manufacturer; choose a pack with a screwed-shut compartment when children are involved.
- A few small pieces of clear craft tape; optional clear-drying craft glue for securing knots.
- One plain scrap card for a reusable star pattern.
- A suitable hanging hook or freestanding display support and a fastening for the battery pack.
Choose cardstock that holds its shape when lifted by one point. Avoid thin gift wrap, which curls easily. If only single-sided glitter card is available, the plain reverse will show as the stars turn; you can decorate it separately or accept that handmade detail.
Tools You Will Need
Gather scissors, a pencil, a ruler, and a small single-hole punch. A narrow punch around 2–3 mm makes a neat threading hole. An adult should use any installation tools required by the chosen support. Ordinary craft glue is optional, so a hot glue gun is unnecessary.
How to Make the Twinkling Star Hoop Mobile
1Step 1: Cut Six Glitter Stars
Draw a simple five-point star about 3 inches (8 cm) wide on scrap card and cut it out. Use that pattern to trace three stars on the back of the gold cardstock and three on the back of the silver cardstock. Leave a little space between outlines so the scissors can turn comfortably.
Cut slowly around each point. A slightly rounded tip is easier for younger makers to cut and less likely to bend than a very sharp tip. Keep all six stars the same size, then clear away the scraps before moving on.

2Step 2: Thread the Star Hangers
Punch one small hole near the top point of every star, leaving at least 5 mm of card between the hole and the edge. Cut six clear-thread pieces, allowing extra length for knots. Aim for finished hanging drops of 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 cm from the hoop to each star's top point.
Thread one end through a star hole and secure it with a snug double knot. Trim only the short end. Leave the other end free for tying to the hoop. Lay the threaded stars separately on the table so the lines do not tangle.

3Step 3: Prepare the Hoop and Lights
Cut three cotton cords about 45 cm long. Tie one end of each cord to the hoop at evenly spaced points. Gather their free ends above the center and tie them into a hanging loop. Adjust the cords so the hoop will sit level when lifted.
Test the battery-operated lights, then switch them off before assembly. Carefully wind the lit section around the wooden rim, keeping bulbs uncovered. Secure the wire with small pieces of clear tape where necessary. Leave the unlit lead free. The battery pack will be fastened to the display support separately rather than hanging from its wire or pulling one side of the hoop down.

4Step 4: Attach the Stars and Ribbon Tails
Keep the hoop flat on the table. Space the six star threads around its rim, alternating gold and silver, and tie each free end firmly to the wood. Lay the stars outward as you work. This lets you check the spacing without lifting everything at once.
Cut four ribbon pieces about 40 cm long: two ivory and two champagne. Tie them between selected star strands, leaving tails around 30 cm after knotting. Trim the ends neatly with shallow V cuts. Leave some gaps open so the stars can move freely. If you add a tiny dab of glue to a knot, let it set according to the glue label before hanging.

5Step 5: Hang, Balance, and Switch On
An adult should place the hanging loop on a suitable secured support. Fasten the battery pack separately, leaving slack in its lead and keeping the switch accessible. Check that the three support cords share the load and the wooden hoop is level.
Untangle the star lines and turn each star forward for the first display. Adjust their positions if two stars keep touching. Once all knots are secure, switch on the LEDs for the finished reveal. Turn them off when the decoration is unattended and follow the light manufacturer's instructions.

Helpful Tips for Making This Craft
Work on a clear table and finish one thread at a time. Transparent line can be difficult to see, so placing a plain light-colored sheet beneath it helps. Keep star sizes consistent to make balancing easier, and avoid adding heavy ornaments to a lightweight hoop.
This is a decorative mobile rather than a toy. Display it away from children's reach, pets, walkways, candles, and heat sources. Do not hang it over a crib or sleeping area. Check the support and knots before each use, especially after packing it away.
Easy Ways to Customize the Craft
Try navy stars with silver ribbon for a night-sky theme, or ivory stars with gold accents for a winter party. Replace glitter card with metallic card for a smoother finish. Keep the same six-star layout while changing the colors so the construction stays simple.
For a daytime classroom display, leave out the lights entirely. A smaller hoop also works, but shorten the drops and use smaller stars so the pieces have room to move. Keep the battery pack separately supported whenever lights are included.
Where to Use or Display It
Hang the finished decoration in an indoor holiday corner, above a display table with adequate clearance, or beside a reading nook. It can also decorate a party photo area. Choose a spot without strong drafts; gentle movement looks lovely, while gusts can twist the lines together.
Final Thoughts
The appeal of this star mobile comes from its open center, staggered stars, and soft rim of light. Take your time with the knots and spacing, then enjoy the finished decoration. Once you have made the first version, changing its colors is an easy way to adapt it for another celebration.
