Santa and Holly Paper Christmas Crown for Kids

Make a bright Santa and holly paper Christmas crown using cardstock, paper shapes and fluffy pom-poms. Five pointed peaks form a wearable headband, while a layered Santa face creates a cheerful front decoration.

This holiday activity works well for children ages 4 to 8. An adult prepares difficult cuts, helps size the headband and handles stronger adhesive. Children help assemble the face, arrange holly leaves and add paper details.

  • Peach paper for one 6.5 x 5 cm face oval

  • White paper for one 9 x 7 cm scalloped beard and two 3 x 1.8 cm moustache pieces

  • Five medium white pom-poms for crown points

  • Nineteen small white pom-poms, five for the Santa hat and fourteen for lower band

  • Glue stick, paper-safe strong tacky glue (adult-applied), pencil, ruler, blunt-tip scissors and optional clothespins

How to make the Santa paper crown

1Step 1: Cut crown strips

Mark two red 30 x 9 cm bands. Cut five continuous triangular peaks along their top edges, using scarlet for three peaks and cranberry for two. Adults handle pointed cuts.

2Step 2: Join and size the crown

Join strips with a 1 cm overlap and curve into a circular band. Check the size loosely on a child before securing the back seam. Keep all five peaks upright.

3Step 3: Build the Santa medallion

Glue peach face on white beard, fit the deep red triangular hat above, place two black eyes, pink cheeks, red nose and two white moustache halves. Add five small pom-poms to the hat brim.

4Step 4: Make two holly clusters

Cut four green holly leaves. Form two opposite-facing leaf pairs and glue three red paper berries onto the center of each pair.

5Step 5: Attach front decorations

Center the Santa medallion under the middle front point. Glue the holly clusters equally on its left and right, leaving the rear band undecorated.

6Step 6: Add soft trim and finish

Adult secures five white pom-poms to the five peak tips and fourteen smaller white pom-poms along the visible lower edge. Allow strong glue to dry fully before wearing.

Before you begin

Place paper shapes in separate piles. Decide which section of the band will face front. The five crown points must stay evenly spaced, with the center point directly above the Santa face. Work on a washable surface and keep loose small pieces away from younger siblings.

Helpful tips

Use medium-weight cardstock so the points stand upright without curling. Adults should cut five clean points and test the fit before decorations are attached.

Use a glue stick for paper layers and a small amount of tacky glue for pom-poms. Do not place a crown on a child until all glued trim is firmly attached and dry.

Change the look

Swap scarlet and cranberry peak positions while preserving five points. Choose lime or forest-green holly leaves. Replace flat red paper berries with red paper circles cut from leftover cardstock. Keep every decorative item lightweight.

Wearing and displaying

Wear the crown for a class Christmas party, holiday photo or family activity. When the glue has dried, store the crown upright in a box to keep the points straight. If the headband becomes too tight, an adult should adjust the back overlap rather than pulling the paper apart.

A cheerful handmade holiday project

Children practice arranging shapes, matching pairs and following an ordered project. The finished crown also works as a festive table display when the child is not wearing it.
