Materials You Will Need
You will need:
Adult supervision is recommended when younger children are using scissors.
1Step 1: Gather the Materials
Place all your craft supplies on a clean table. Choose the paper colors you want to use for Santa, the snowman, and the reindeer. Cut several long paper strips for the chains and keep the remaining paper for faces, hats, scarves, antlers, buttons, and other decorations. Preparing everything first makes the craft much easier to assemble.

2Step 2: Cut Out the Character Pieces
Before making the chains, cut out the decorative pieces for all three characters. For Santa, prepare: - Face - Red hat - White hat trim - White beard and mustache - Pink nose and cheeks - Black belt - Gold buckle - Black buttons For the snowman, prepare: - White face - Black top hat - Orange carrot nose - Black eyes and smile dots - Brown twig arms - Blue scarf - Black buttons For the reindeer, prepare: - Round brown face - Dark brown antlers - Brown ears with pink centers - Black eyes - Red nose - Pink cheeks - Green bow - Decorative red collar - White buttons Keep all the pieces grouped together so they do not get mixed up.

3Step 3: Make the Santa Paper Chain
Cut several equal strips from red paper. Take the first strip, form it into a circle, and glue the ends together. Thread the second strip through the first loop before gluing it into another circle. Continue until you have a short red paper chain. Add Santa's black belt and gold buckle to one of the middle loops.

4Step 4: Finish Santa
Glue Santa's face to the top of the red chain. Add the red hat, white trim, beard, mustache, nose, cheeks, and facial details. Attach a short ribbon loop behind Santa's hat so the craft can be hung. Make sure all the pieces are firmly glued before lifting it.

5Step 5: Make the Snowman Paper Chain
Cut several equal strips of white paper. Create linked loops in the same way as you made Santa's chain. Once the chain is ready, prepare the snowman's face and accessories. Glue the black hat onto the head, then add the eyes, orange carrot nose, dotted smile, and pink cheeks. Keep the brown twig arms, blue scarf, and black buttons ready for the next step.

6Step 6: Finish the Snowman
Attach the snowman's decorated head to the top of the white paper chain. Glue the blue scarf below the face. Add the brown twig arms to the sides and place the black buttons down the front. Finally, glue a ribbon loop behind the hat for hanging.

7Step 7: Make the Reindeer Paper Chain
Cut several equal strips from brown paper. Create a chain by linking and gluing the paper loops together. Next, assemble the reindeer face. Glue the antlers behind the round brown head. Add the ears, eyes, red nose, cheeks, and a small smiling mouth. Prepare the green bow and decorative collar.

8Step 8: Finish the Reindeer
Glue the completed reindeer face to the top of the brown chain. Attach the green bow underneath the face and add the red decorative collar. Glue two white buttons onto the upper brown loop. Attach green ribbon behind the head so the reindeer can be hung.

9Step 9: Hang and Display the Christmas Characters
Once all three characters are completely dry, hang them together. You can display them: - On a classroom wall - From a Christmas tree - On bedroom doors - Across a mantel - On a holiday bulletin board - In a craft room Hang Santa, the snowman, and the reindeer at slightly different heights for a more playful Christmas display.

Easy Craft Tips
Use cardstock for the faces and decorative pieces because it keeps its shape better than thin paper. Regular construction paper works well for the loops because it bends easily.
For younger children, adults can pre-cut the smaller facial pieces. Kids can then focus on making the chains and gluing the decorations in place.
You can also use googly eyes, pom-poms, glitter foam, stickers, or patterned paper to personalize each character.
Why This Is a Good Christmas Craft for Kids
This project is simple but still gives children several useful hands-on activities.
Making the paper loops helps with fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, while cutting the shapes encourages scissor practice.
Children can also experiment with colors, expressions, decorations, and character details, making every finished craft a little different.
Finished Christmas Paper Chain Characters
Once completed, you will have three cheerful hanging decorations: Santa, a snowman, and a reindeer.
The linked paper loops give the characters a fun three-dimensional appearance, while the simple faces and accessories make them easy for children to recognize and create.

Questions parents ask
What age is this Christmas paper chain craft suitable for?
This craft is best for children around 5 years and older. Younger children can also enjoy it with help from an adult, especially for cutting smaller pieces.
What type of paper works best?
Construction paper works well for the paper loops because it bends easily. Cardstock is better for the faces, antlers, hats, and other decorations because it holds its shape.
Can I make only one character?
Yes. You can make just Santa, the snowman, or the reindeer. You do not need to create the full set.
How many paper loops should I use?
About 4 to 5 loops per character works well, but you can make the chains shorter or longer depending on the look you want.
Can kids use glue sticks instead of liquid glue?
Yes. Glue sticks are ideal for lightweight paper pieces and are usually less messy. For thicker cardstock or heavier decorations, craft glue may hold better.
Can I use googly eyes?
Yes. Googly eyes are a fun alternative to paper eyes and can make the characters look more playful.
How long does this craft take?
Most children can complete one character in about 20 to 30 minutes. Making all three usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes, depending on how much cutting is prepared in advance.
